Join Journal News columnist David McKay Wilson for a community conversation on the Hudson Valley’s indigenous people and the issue of the Indian mascot in the Mahopac schools. Wilson will discuss the history of the Wappinger tribe in the region, the scholarly research on the impact Native American-themed mascots have on Native American youths, and the national movement that has led to the retirement of such mascots at high schools, colleges, and professional sports teams.  

Speaker will include Heather Bruegl, the former director of Cultural Affairs of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohicans.  She how serves as Education Director of the Forge Project in Columbia County.
