During the early days of the 2020 Pandemic, when the weather was dark and cold, Mary McFerran started to create quilts. She was unable to purchase new fabrics and dove into her massive collection of assorted remnants.
Mary studied traditional quilt makers and reviewed the wonderful quilts of Gees Bend. Her own quilts were not formally planned- she did not use historic patterns. Instead, she combined elements intuitively and relied on the haptic appeal of certain textiles. The process felt freeing and comforting to her.
Mary states: "The subject matter is personal memory and I think of the collection as Memory Maps. As spring turned into summer, political unrest also found its way into my work."
